India to host G-20 Summit in 2023

  • India will host the Summit of the G20 Group in 2023. India was earlier slated to host the summit in 2022.
  • However, now the G20 Summit be be hosted by Italy in 2021, Indonesia in 2022, India in 2023 and Brazil in 2024.
  • India and Indonesia have swapped their respective hosting year of G20 as Indonesia would also chair the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2023.

5th India International Cherry Blossom Festival of Shillong Cancelled due to COVID-19

  • The 5th India International Cherry Blossom Festival, has been cancelled due to COVID-19 pandemic.
  • The festival is held every year in Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, to celebrate the unique autumn flowering of the Himalayan cherry blossoms and mark the beginning of India’s version of autumn.
  • Every year, Shillong hosts a plethora of events like fitness art, fashion show, rock concerts and much more to mark the festival.

India’s first moss garden built in Nainital district of Uttarakhand

  • India’s first Moss Garden has been unveiled at Khurpatal in Nainital district of Uttarakhand.
  • The iconic garden, developed by the Uttarakhand forest department is spread over an area of 10 hectares.
  • Moss Garden, Khurpatal houses around 30 different species of moss and certain other bryophyte species.
  • The Moss garden would enable conservation of various species of moss and other bryophytes and make people aware of its significance in the environment. It would also create a recreation centre for tourists in the state.

Indian Navy gets 9th P-8I anti-submarine warfare aircraft from Boeing

  • The Indian Navy have received its ninth P-8I long range maritime reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare aircraft.
  • India had first signed a contract with Boeing in 2009 for eight P-8Is to replace the Indian Navy’s aging Tupolev Tu-142M maritime surveillance turboprops.
  • The ninth aircraft has been received under the nearly $1 billion deal signed by Indian Navy with the Boeing for four additional planes in 2016.
  • The aircraft landed at INS Hansa in Goa on 18 November 2020. It is being used by India in Ladakh for surveillance besides the Indian Ocean Region. 
  • The remaining three are scheduled to be handed over to India in 2021.
  • India had become the first international customer of Boeing for the P-8 aircraft with the conclusion of the nearly $2.1 billion contract for a total of eight aircraft.

Malaysia Hosts 2020 APEC Summit

  • The 2020 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Meeting was held on 20 November 2020 under the Chairmanship of Malaysian Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.
  • This was the first time that all 21 APEC Economic Leaders met virtually due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
  • The theme of the APEC Malaysia 2020 was “Optimising Human Potential Towards a Resilient Future of Shared Prosperity: Pivot. Prioritise. Progress”. 
  • The APEC 2020 ended with the adoption of the APEC Putrajaya Vision 2040 and the 2020 Kuala Lumpur Declaration.
  • The Putrajaya Vision 2040 is a new 20-year growth vision, which will replace the existing Bogor Goals, which was agreed by leaders in 1994 for free and open trade and investment in APEC. 
  • This is second time Malaysia hosted an APEC meeting, having hosted one in 1998.
  • The APEC Summit 2021 will be hosted by New Zealand.

India-Singapore Maritime Exercise SIMBEX-20 Begins in Andaman Sea

  • The 27th edition of India – Singapore Bilateral Maritime Exercise SIMBEX-20 has been organised from 23 to 25 November 2020 in Andaman Sea.
  • Indian Navy (IN) is the host for the 2020 edition of SIMBEX.
  • The SIMBEX series of exercises is being held between IN and Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN), annually since 1994.
  • The exercise aims at enhancing mutual inter-operability and imbibing best practices from each other.
  • From Indian side, destroyer Rana with integral Chetak helicopter and indigenously built corvettes Kamorta and Karmuk,, IN submarine Sindhuraj and P8I maritime reconnaissance aircraft will participate in the exercise.
  • RSN will be represented by the ‘Formidable’ Class frigates ‘Intrepid’ and ‘Steadfast’ with integral S70B helicopter and ‘Endurance’ Class Landing Ship Tank ‘Endeavour’ in the exercise.

LIC Launches Digital Application Tool ‘ANANDA’ for Agents

  • Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) launched a first-of-its kind digital application called, “ANANDA” for the agents to onboard a new Life Insurance Policy, even without physically meeting the customer.
  • ANANDA stands for Atma Nirbhar Agents NewBusiness Digital Application.
  • The Digital application was launched by M R Kumar, Chairman, LIC of India through Video Conferencing on 19 November.
  • ANANDA is a unique tool to facilitate the process to get the Life Insurance policy through a totally paperless and completely digital module with the help of the Agent / Intermediary.
  • Prospective customers can avail the facility of taking a New Life Insurance Policy in the comfort of their homes/offices without having to meet the agent in person. 
  • It is built on paperless KYC process using Aadhaar based e-authentication of the Life Proposed.

Daniil Medvedev beat Dominic Thiem to win ATP Tour Finals 2020

  • In Tennis, Daniil Medvedev (Russia) beat Dominic Thiem (Austria) to win the 2020 ATP Tour Finals, 4-6, 7-6, 6-4, held in London on 22 November 2020.
  • This is the biggest title of his career. The 24-year-old will finish the year at fourth position in the world rankings.
  • In the doubles final, Dutch-Croatian duo Wesley Koolhof and Nikola Mektic claimed their first title together after surpassing Jurgen Melzer and Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6-2, 3-6, 10-5.

  • Noted Telugu poet, journalist, scriptwriter Shaik Khaja Hussain, has passed away after brief illness. He was 70.
  • Popularly known as Devi Priya, the renowned poet bagged the Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award in 2017, for his book Gaali Rangu.

Former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi passes away at 84

  • Three-time Assam Chief Minister from Congress party Tarun Gogoi, has passed away after been undergoing treatment for post-Covid complications. He was 84.
  • Tarun Gogoi had served as the Chief Minister of Assam between 2001 and 2015.
  • He was the longest serving chief minister of Assam.
  • Apart from this, Gogoai had also served as the food and food processing industry minister in the Union Cabinet of India under Prime Minister Narasimha Rao between 1991 and 1996.

  • The 59th National Pharmacy Week (NPW) was celebrated throughout the country from November 16-22, 2020..
  • The theme of the NPW 2020 is “Pharmacists: Frontline Health Professionals”
  • The Indian Pharmaceutical Association (IPA) organises NPW during the third week of November every year.
  • The main aim to this week is to make all stakeholders aware of the presence of pharmacists in the society and to know the role played by registered pharmacists with respect to medicines, their usage, handling and dispensing.

AAI observes Aviation Safety Awareness Week 2020 (23-27 November 2020)

  • Airports Authority of India (AAI) is observing the Aviation Safety Awareness Week 2020 from 23 November to 27 November 2020.
  • The week-long celebration is being observed at all airports and ANS locations managed by AAI across India. 
  • Airport Directors will be organizing awareness programme in school/colleges on role of local residents in aviation safety to make people of surrounding community aware about their role in ensuring safety of aircraft operation in local airport.
  • The Ministry of Civial Aviation aims to achieve long term objective of Zero fatality by the year 2030 as envisaged by ICAO in its Global Aviation Safety Plan (GASP-2020-22) through better managed safety systems of stakeholders.
