Indian Army names Firing Range after Vidya Balan

  • The Indian Army has named a military firing range, situated at Gulmarg in the Baramulla district of Jammu & Kashmir, after Bollywood actress Vidya Balan.
  • The firing range will now be called as ‘Vidya Balan Firing Range’. 
  • The decision to name the firing range was taken in recognition of the contribution to the actress to the Indian cinema.

Government sets up 25-member Development Council for Cement Industry, under Dalmia Bharat Group CMD Puneet Dalmia

  • Centre has set up a 25-member Development Council for Cement Industry (DCCI), to suggest ways for eliminating waste, obtaining maximum production, improve quality, reduce costs and promote standardization of products.
  • The Council will be chaired by Dalmia Bharat Group CMD Puneet Dalmia.

Government brings Department of Public Enterprises under Ministry of Finance

  • Centre has decided to bring the Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) under the Ministry of Finance (MoF).
  • Earlier, this DPE was under the Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises.
  • The decision for such change has been taken to ease coordination related to future disinvestment programmes.
  • With the inclusion of DPE, the Ministry of Finance now has six departments under it.
  • Other department under MoF are: Department of Economic Affairs, Department of Expenditure, Department of Revenue, Department of Investment and Public Asset Management and Department of Financial Services.
  • Meanwhile, the Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises will now be called the Ministry of Heavy Industries.

IDFC First Bank launches ‘Ghar Ghar Ration’ scheme

  • The IDFC First Bank has launched a unique Employee-funded program called ‘Ghar Ghar Ration’ for its low-income customers who were affected by Covid-19. 
  • Under the Ghar Ghar Ration scheme, the employees of the bank have contributed their personal income to help such customers who are affected by the deadly pandemic. 
  • It is a first such employee-led initiative by any bank.

Bharat Dynamics Ltd signs Rs 499-crore deal with Indian Air Force for Akash missiles

  • The Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) has signed a contract with the Ministry of Defence for the manufacture and supply of Akash missiles to the Indian Air Force (IAF).
  • The total worth of the deal is around Rs 499 crore.
  • Akash is a medium-range mobile surface-to-air missile (SAM) system, being developed under India’s Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP).
  • BDL is the prime production agency for projects under IGMDP.
  • Akash missile is developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and produced by Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), both for the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force.

“The Light of Asia: The Poem That Defined The Buddha”, by Jairam Ramesh to be released in May 2022

  • Former Union Minister Jairam Ramesh has come out with his new book titled “The Light of Asia: The Poem that Defined the Buddha”.
  • The book will be released in May 2022 under the Penguin’s ‘Viking’ imprint publications.
  • This book is a biography of the phenomenal poem titled “The Light of Asia”, written and published by Sir Edwin Arnold in 1879, which describes the life and time of Prince Gautama Siddhartha, who after attaining enlightenment became the Buddha. It presents his life, character, and philosophy, in a series of verses/poem.

African-American Zaila Avant-garde Wins 2021 Scripps National Spelling Bee

  • Zaila Avant-garde, an African-American, from New Orleans in Louisiana, has won the 2021 Scripps National Spelling Bee.
  • The 14-year-old Avant-garde, who is also an accomplished basketball player, is the first African-American contestant to win the prestigious competition in its 93 years history.
  • The 8th-grader Avant-garde correctly spelt “Murraya”, a genus of tropical Asiatic and Australian trees having pinnate leaves and flowers, to win USD 50,000 prize.
  • She is also the first Black contestant to win since Jody-Anne Maxwell of Jamaica in 1998.
  • 12 year-old Indian-origin Chaitra Thummala, from San Francisco and 13-year-old Indian-origin Bhavana Madini, from New York won the second and third place respectively.

Haiti President Jovenel Moise, Passes Away at 53 Following Assassination

  • The President of Haiti, Jovenel Moise, has passed away, following his assassination at his private residence in Pétion-Ville,  in the capital Port-au-Prince, on July 07, 2021. He was 53.
  • Along with President Moise, his wife Martine was also injured during the attack.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has condoled the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse and the attack on First Lady Martine Moïse of Haiti.
  • As per the report, a team of 28 assailants, carried out the operation to assassinate the president.
  • Jovenel Moise, served as the President of Haiti from 2017 until his assassination in 2021.
  • Haiti Capital- Port-au-Prince; Currency-Haitian gourde.

National Fish Farmers’ Day : 10 July

  • The National Fish Farmers’ Day is celebrated every year on 10 July, by the Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying in association with the National Fisheries Development Board (NFDB).
  • The day is commemorated annually in remembrance of scientists Dr K H Alikunhi and Dr. H.L. Chaudhury who had invented induced breeding technology of Indian major carps on 10 July 1957.
  • 2021 will mark 21st National Fish Farmers’ Day.
