RBI enhances the incentive for distribution of coins over the counter by banks to Rs 65

  • The Reserve Bank of India has increased the incentive that it gives to the banks for the distribution of coins over the counter from Rs 25/bag to Rs 65/bag of coin. This will be effective from September 01, 2021.
  • The RBI provides incentives to banks and currency chests under the “Currency Distribution & Exchange Scheme (CDES)” for the distribution of coins over the counter. This is done to promote the circulation of coins.
  • An additional incentive of Rs. 10/- per bag would be paid for coin distribution in rural and semi-urban areas on the submission of a CA / Auditor certificate to this effect. (.i.e Rs 75/bag)

Government Extends ‘Vivad se Vishwas’ scheme Deadline till September 30, 2021

  • The government has announced extension in the deadline for making payment under the direct tax dispute settlement scheme ‘Vivad Se Vishwas’ by one months till September 30, 2021.
  • In June, the Ministry of Finance had extended the deadline for making payments under the scheme till August 31.
  • The decision for further extension in deadline was taken considering the difficulties being faced in issuing and amending Form no 3, which is essential for making payment by the declarant under Vivad se Vishwas Act.
  • This is the fifth time that the deadline is being extended by the Ministry of Finance.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated to the nation the renovated complex of Jallianwala Bagh Smarak in Punjab’s Amritsar via video conference on August 28, 2021, to mark 102 years of Jallianwala Bagh massacre.
  • The historic garden is a memorial of national importance, preserved in the memory of countless revolutionaries, sacrificers, fighters, who were killed in the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre, which occurred on the festival of Baisakhi on 13 April 1919.
  • Apart from this, PM Modi also inaugurated four museum galleries developed at the Smarak, to showcase the historical value of events that unfolded in Punjab in 1919.
  • PM also announced multiple development initiatives taken by the government to upgrade the complex.

World’s Highest Altitude Movie Theatre launched in Ladakh at 11,562 ft

  • The world’s highest movie theatre has recently been inaugurated in Ladakh, which got its first ever mobile digital movie theatre in the Paldan area of Leh, at an altitude of 11,562 feet.
  • The inflatable theatre can operate in -28 degree Celcius.
  • The initiative aims to bring cinema watching experience to most remotest areas of India.
  • It must be noted that four such theatres will be established in Leh in the coming period.

LIC launches ANANDA mobile app for Agents/Intermediaries

  • The Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) has launched the mobile application of its digital paperless solution, ANANDA, for LIC agents.
  • ANANDA stands for Atma Nirbhar Agents New Business Digital Application.
  • The ANANDA mobile app was launched by LIC Chairperson MR Kumar on August 24, 2021, through Video Conferencing.
  • The ANANDA Digital application was launched in November 2020 for LIC Agents / Intermediaries.
  • With Mobile App in place, the usage level of ANANDA among the Agents / Intermediaries will go up and help LIC to take the New Business fortunes to bigger heights.
  • The ANANDA tool enables LIC agent to register new LIC policies from the comfort of their home.

NSG commandos undertake mock counter-terrorist drills ‘Gandiv’

  • The National Security Guard (NSG) conducted week-long counter-terrorism exercise called ‘Gandiv’ from August 22 to August 28, 2021,
  • The third edition of the annual drill was held at multiple cities in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and the national capital region by NSG to check its response time and reaction to hostage and hijack-like situations.
  • The exercise also aimed at enhancing the counter-terror skills of the state administration, police, anti-terrorist squads and also create awareness among the public.
  • The National Security Guard is the counter-terrorism unit under the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs.

Sports Minister Anurag Singh Thakur launches Fit India Mobile App 

  • The Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Shri Anurag Singh Thakur launched the Fit India Mobile Application on the occasion of National Sports Day on August 29, 2021, at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, New Delhi, and also as part of Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav celebration.
  • The launch of app also marks the second anniversary of Fit India Movement, which was launched on August 29, 2019.
  • The Fit India App aims to empower every Indian to check their fitness level based on a set of age specific fitness tests and get specific recommendations on how to improve their fitness level through physical activities including yoga protocols.

Max Verstappen wins rain-affected Belgian Grand Prix 2021

  • Max Verstappen (Red Bull – Netherlands) has been declared the winner of the Belgian Grand Prix 2021. The Belgian Grand Prix was stopped due to rain and only two laps were completed.
  • The winner was decided based on progress made in these two laps. George Russell, Williams came second and Lewis Hamilton, Mercedes came third.

Indian para-athlete Bhavinaben Patel wins silver at 2020 Tokyo Paralympics

  • In table tennis, Indian paddler Bhavinaben Patel has claimed historic silver medal at 2020 Paralymic Games at Tokyo on August 29, 2021, in the women’s singles summit clash.
  • The 34-year-old Patel lost to Chinese paddler Ying Zhou, 0-3, in her maiden Paralymic Games.
  • This is the first medal for India at the ongoing Tokyo Paralymic Games.
  • Patel is the only second Indian woman to win a medal at the Paralympics, after Deepa Malik, who claimed silver in shotput at 2016 Rio Olympics.

High Jumper Nishad Kumar wins silver at Tokyo Paralympics

  • India’s Nishad Kumar has clinched a silver medal in the men’s high jump T47 event at the Tokyo Paralympics 2020 on August 29, 2021.
  • This is the second medal for India at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics
  • The 23-year-old Nishad made a jump of 2.06m, and in doing so created an Asian record. He also equalled his jump with USA’s Dallas Wise, who also took home silver.
  • The Indian para-athlete, hails from Badaun village in Una district of Himachal Pradesh.
  • Roderick Townsend of USA won gold, with a jump of 2.15m.

  • In Chess, Indian Grandmaster S P Sethuraman won the 2021 Barcelona Open chess tournament title, remaining unbeaten through the nine rounds, winning six matches and drawing three.
  • Chennai-born Sethuraman collected 7.5 points after ninth and final round to tie the score with Daniil Yuffa of Russia.
  • However the Indian player emerged as the winner on the basis of a better tie-break score.
  • India’s Karthikeyan Murali finished third.
