SAUBHAGYA Scheme Completes 4 years of successful implementation

  • The Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana -“Saubhagya Scheme” has completed four years of successful implementation, on 25 September 2021.
  • The scheme was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 25th of September, 2017 with an outlay of Rs. 16,320 crore
  • Saubhagya scheme aims to achieve universal household electrification by providing last mile connectivity and electricity connections to all households in rural areas and all poor households in urban areas across the country.
  • As of March 31, 2021, 2.82 crore households have been electrified since the launch of SAUBHAGYA.

First in-person Quad Leaders’ Summit held in Washington

  • The first in-person meeting of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) was held on September 24, 2021, at the White House in Washington D.C.
  • Quad nation comprise of India, the United States, Australia and Japan.
  • The heads of government of Australia, India, Japan, and the United States participated in the Quad leaders meeting, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, US President Joe Biden, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga and Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison.
  • The four Pacific nation security cooperation bloc recommended various initiatives to deepen the ties and advance practical cooperation on 21st-century challenges which included:
    1. ending the COVID-19 pandemic, including by increasing production and access to safe and effective vaccines;
    2. promoting high-standards infrastructure;
    3. combatting the climate crisis;
    4. partnering on emerging technologies, space, and cybersecurity;
    5. cultivating next-generation talent in all of our countries

  • The Union Home Minister and Minister of CooperationAmit Shah inaugurated and addressed the first-ever National Cooperative Conference (Sehkarita Sammelan) on September 25, 2021 at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi.
  • The minister outlined the government’s vision and roadmap for the development of Cooperative sector.
  • This conference was India’s first such cooperative conference, to provide a platform for accelerating and strengthening Indian cooperatives on the global stage
  • The conference was organised jointly by the IFFCO, National Cooperative Federation of India, Amul, Sahakar Bharti, NAFED, KRIBHCO and all cooperatives together.
  • Over 2,100 representatives from different states and various cooperative sectors across the country participated in the conference to contribute towards realizing the dream of a self-reliant India.

  • Apple co-founder, Steve Wozniak has joined hands with Ripcord Inc. founder Alex Fielding to announce a new space company, Privateer Space.
  • The ‘Privateer’ will be a private company with the mission to “keep Space safe and accessible to all humankind”.

Former UK PM Gordon Brown appointed as WHO ambassador for Global Health Financing

  • The World Health Organization (WHO) has appointed Gordon Brown, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, as its ambassador for Global Health Financing, on September 20, 2021.
  • As an ambassador, Brown will work to elevate and support WHO’s work to raise global awareness about the great need for sustained global health financing, particularly from G20 and G7 countries.

  • The book explores the history of how China has negotiated with India, be it the early years after Independence or the current times, based on six historical and recent events in the India-China relationship.
  • The purpose of this book is to identify the strategy, tactics and tools that China employs in its diplomatic negotiations with India, and the learnings for India from its past dealings with China that may prove helpful in future negotiations with the country.

  • The book is a narration of India’s road to war with China in 1962.
  • The book traces how the India and China dealt with one another in their earliest years, from the friendship of the early 1950s to the 1962 war.

Kamla Bhasin, noted women’s right activist and author, passes away at 75

  • Women’s rights activist and noted author, Kamla Bhasin, has passed away battling cancer. She was  75.
  • The noted poet and author has authored several books, especially on gender theory and feminism, many of which have been translated into more than 30 languages.
  • Bhasin started working on developmental issues in the 1970s and her work focused on gender, education, human development and the media.
